What I didn’t anticipate was the transformation it had on my relationship with my self, and eventually others.
  1. How long have you been teaching Pilates? What does your practice mean to you, personally? I’ve been teaching Pilates since 1998, a long time! I used to have to explain it all the time, now people know exactly what it is. I was recently reminded of what my practice means to me. I was at a fitness convention (not Pilates) and everyone was talking about these pounding, pounding workouts. I get a great workout, long lean muscles and a happy spine with Pilates. It’s perfect for me. 2. Where do you teach? How long have you taught Pilates in your area (city)? What’s your experience with Pilates in your area? I opened Modern Pilates in 1999 and I was one of the first in Massachusetts to have a studio. I’ve watched Pilates grow and grow and grow. At first it was just women but we have a lot of men in our studio now. It’s refreshing to see them come in. 3. What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates? Yoga is more about moving through different poses as part of a group practice. You find the right place for you within the practice and begin to grow within that space. Pilates is all about you. We tailor exercises to every person who’s in front of us. Even if it’s a group class, we don’t go over three people and we focus on whatever adjustments you need to be successful. So the workouts will be varied, challenging ...

1. How long have you been teaching Yoga? What does your practice mean to you, personally? I began teaching yoga in 1992, actually the year before I completed my first yoga teacher training at the Kripalu Center in Lenox Mass. My teacher had a gig at a local health club and could not keep the commitment to teach, so she asked me to step in for her. It was an incredible opportunity for me and although I was scared to death I said “YES” and that has been my mantra ever since, if someone asks me to “step up” I always say “YES!” Having a regular yoga practice has been a life saver for me, physically, mentally, emotionally. Through life’s ups and downs, my mat is a place of balance and ease, and I can navigate my days with more clarity when I am faithful to my practice. 2. How long have you taught Yoga in the boston area(or your specific city)? What’s your experience with Yoga in Boston(or specific city)? I have been teaching in East Longmeadow, a suburb outside of Springfield, (my home town) in Western MA, for over 19 years. My studio, Heartsong Yoga, was established in 1993. On my teaching team is my husband Tony, and my mom, Beth (celebrating her 73rd birthday this month) along with a wonderful group of talented and spirited teachers of many traditions. 3. What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates? Yoga comes from a long and rich tradition steeped ...

  1. How long have you been teaching Pilates? What does your practice mean to you, personally? I began practicing Pilates 15 years ago, and have been teaching it for most of that time. As a former professional dancer, understanding how to move well has always been an integral part of my life. Teaching Pilates seemed a natural evolution for me as it teaches body awareness and enhanced movement for any individual. It’s the most rewarding job I can think of, and my own daily practice is what inspires me to keep moving forward every single day. 2. Where do you teach? How long have you taught Pilates in your area? What’s your experience with Pilates in your area? I recently moved from New York City to live and work in Boston, which has a fantastic fitness culture. I feel fortunate that I got to study with some of the best Pilates teachers in the world during my years in New York, including teachers that studied with Joseph Pilates himself. It’s very exciting for me to bring what I learned to Boston, and raise the bar for Pilates teachers and practitioners with teacher trainings and continuing education workshops. 3. What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates? From the way Yoga and Pilates are practiced today, it can be hard to tell the two of them apart, but historically they have very little in common. I actually wrote a comprehensive article about the differences between the two modalities, but ...

Author: Kate Thomas, M.S. (candidate) in Nutrition Tis the season and as joyous as they may be, holiday parties can create a source of stress for those who are trying to stay health- conscious. Cheese platters, eggnog and pie can pack on a few extra pounds when over-consumed, but there are ways you can enjoy these holiday traditions and still maintain a healthy weight – guilt free! Here are some quick tips to help you enjoy this season’s holiday parties without gaining weight: 1) Eat a salad before you go. Have you ever tried to cut calories during the day to “save space” for party appetizers and sugary desserts? Here’s the truth – it just doesn’t work! Consuming small meals throughout the day will keep your metabolism revved and ready to work. Have salad or yogurt with fruit before you leave the house, so you don’t arrive to the party ravenous. This will help you make better food choices and prevent you from overindulging. 2) Be mindful of your hunger. Survey the food table, and pick out 1-2 snacks to enjoy. Then go enjoy the party! If you finish your plate and you’re still hungry, there’s no need to deprive yourself. But if you load up on snacks, you’re more likely to munch mindlessly simply because the food is in front of you. Pay attention to your satiety and allow yourself enough time to feel full before going back for seconds. 3) Bring a healthy option. Prepare a healthy appetizer such as the Baked Coconut Shrimp or Hot Spinach and Artichoke Dip recipes provided below ...

1. How long have you been teaching Yoga? What does your practice mean to you, personally? I started teaching yoga in the ’90′s to inner city kids at a non-profit in New York. I incorporated yoga into every job I had, years before I was certified. I was profoundly inspired by my practice. For me, Yoga was an integral part of healing from a life-threatening disease. Yoga helped me quit smoking. It helped me be a better person, healer and teacher. My practice means so much to me, on so many levels. Yoga is love. 2, Can you tell us about your Yoga project to help soldiers with Yoga? I started my yoga project called Yoga for Heroes at Emperor’s College in Santa Monica. I taught gentle yoga to wounded Vietnam veterans at a non-profit clinic on campus. This is a very personal project. I come from a long line of proud veterans. Some of my family members suffered from PTSD, including my father who was a Captain in the Vietnam War. I grew up listening to war stories about decapitations, children carrying bombs, soldiers dying, and how my uncle’s death at Normandy wounded my grandmother’s heart for life. When a loved one is wounded in service, the suffering and grief has a ripple effect to the rest of the family. Everyone hurts. I had a strong calling to serve veterans, to be part of the healing and offer an opportunity to alleviate the cycle of pain that war passes down. The ...

1. How long have you been teaching Pilates? What does your practice mean to you, personally? I have been teaching Pilates for 14 years- fitness for 18 years. As soon as I graduated from college, I earned my first Group Exercise instructor certification, knowing that it was something that I wanted to keep in my life, but at that point, I never dreamed that I would be able to make it a career- let alone my own business! Many years, an MBA, a career change and the opportunity to open my own studio- and, here I am today- a small business owner, employer and trainer- I not only get to train people and make them healthier for a living, I also get to train other instructors to do the same and give them the opportunity to work with me! I work out every day and run between 35 and 60 miles per week. I do a Pilates mat workout every single day, without fail and work out on the Pilates apparatus a couple times a week. I also incorporate all of the lessons that Pilates teaches in my own work and workout. Pilates builds a suit of armor from within. Pilates is such an amazing form of exercise that helps me in all aspects of my life. Through Pilates, I have learned so much about my own body and exercise in general. It has taught me control and perseverance, dedication and physiological intelligence. 2. How ...

  1. How long have you been teaching Yoga? What does your practice mean to you, personally? I’ve been teaching yoga for 10 years now, but my style has shifted over the years. Even though I was raised by hippie type folk, I discovered yoga on my own to help alleviate my intense back and joint pain that the doctors couldn’t explain. It turned out that I had an SI joint misalignment that yoga helped to heal. I was drawn to the practice because of physical pain, but grew to love the solace that it offers. I feel like yoga peels back the layers of life and returns me to my true self. 2. How long have you taught Yoga in the Boston area? What’s your experience with Yoga in Boston? I’ve been teaching the entire 10 years in the Boston area, beginning in gyms and expanding to yoga studios. I began teaching more of a hatha class based on the viniyoga tradition, but as vinyasa grew in popularity I realized how much I loved to flow. My classes now reflect both the alignment and therapeutic benefits of hatha with the meditative feel of flow. I also teach private classes for those who want to focus on something specific in their practice or for those who have an injury that they are trying to heal. 3. What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates? Yoga is an ancient tradition that has evolved over the ...

I began exploring yoga and meditation as a teenager, realizing then the connection between the mind, body and the process of healing. After a childhood of playing basketball constantly, with little stretching and poor posture, I found myself a 19 year old who could barely run around for an hour without my knees swelling up and immobilizing me. I turned to daily yoga as an answer to my pain, and was able to recover fully in a few months. Knee issues would arise again for me at 27, as I blew out my knee last April playing basketball. After undergoing ACL reconstruction in June, yoga incorporated with physical therapy helped me recover fully in five months; four months ahead of schedule. My career as massage therapist has helped me to understand fitness, injuries and recovery from a soft tissue perspective; this is reflected in my classes as we focus on improving flexibility and muscle conditioning by targeting specific areas of the body to help improve posture and muscular health. Classes are planned in order to help improve overall joint health, and often target areas of repetitive strain or common injuries. I completed my Yoga Teacher Training with David Vendetti at South Boston Yoga, and teach in Jamaica Plain, at Green Street Massage.

Molly has always been a lover of movement. From a very young age she would do sun salutations in her living room and twirl around the kitchen showing off her new ballet moves. It is no surprise that she went into the performing arts and graduated from Emerson College with a degree in Acting and minor in Dance. Right after she graduated college she took her Mat Pilates training thru Balanced Body University and began to teach. This introduction into the world of fitness instruction led her down her life’s path. She went on to become a Yoga teacher thru Finding Inner Peace at Charlestown Yoga 200hr RYT. She also continued her Pilates training thru STOTT and teaches reformer/cadillac as well as Mat. She then went on to train in Barre, thru Zayna Gold and now works with CC Martin and Carolyn Stuart on their new instructor training. Barre made perfect sense to her dance, Pilates and yoga background. Molly loves what she does. She is so excited to bring her years of experience to your fingertips and hopes that you will enjoy the workouts as much as she has in creating them. Please “Like” her on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Molly-Kelleher-Yoga-Pilates-Barre/321776581170452 Check out her Fitness and Acting Life at: www.MollyKelleher.com or join her classes: Mondays 8:30am Barre- Oceanside Pilates and Yoga, Winthrop MA www.oceansidepilatesandyoga.com 11am Reformer Pilates- Oceanside Pilates and Yoga, Winthrop MA 5:30pm All Levels Yoga- Boston Athletic Club, South Boston MA www.bostonathleticclub.com Tuesdays Multiple Barre and Reformer Pilates Classes at ...

She was trained comprehensively through Balanced Body University in Reformer, Mat, Anatomy and Barre and has been teaching for over 7 years through the tutelage of Zayna Gold. Melissa’s passion for helping others and love for Pilates and movement shines when she teaches.
This class is a great introduction to the chakras, or the energetic centers in the subtle body. Often in yoga, we get wrapped up in the physical body, but the work we are doing is also to clear and balance the energetic body, too. The body remembers your life. Emotions and memories that we haven’t processed yet can sometimes become “stuck,” resulting in imbalances and blockages affecting the flow of prana energy which can manifest physically, emotionally, behaviorally. There are 7 chakras located along the pathway of the spine, each associated with a specific aspect of being human. Root Chakra – Rules our connection to the Earth, the physical world and all that we need for survival including grounding, security, family, money, our jobs, and our home. Sacral Chakra – Houses everything within the pelvis, this is a watery, emotional space ruling sensuality, sexuality, creativity, intimacy, joy, gender, and parenting. Solar Plexus Chakra – This is where we hold our self esteem, strength, and personal power. When deficient, we feel insecure and unsupported. When excessive, we feel selfish and angry. The key is to find the balance between strength and surrender. Heart Chakra – The center of the chakra system holds our capacity for love and compassion and tends to carry past wounds. Throat Chakra – The seat of communication, the throat is the tiniest space along the energetic pathway for prana to flow. This chakra houses our inner truth, expression, and the ability to hear others. Third Eye ...

Through continued education, yoga trainings, and Qi Gong trainings, Ben is able to practice what he preaches and offer his students a thorough understanding of the ever-growing practice of yoga. Ben currently studies with Yogarupa Rod Stryker of ParaYoga (www.parayoga.com), Level 2 certified ParaYoga teacher Lauren Toolin (www.laurenjaytoolin.com), and Master teachers Jason Campbell and Michael Leone (www.zenwellness.com). He supplements his yoga training with continuing education seminars on meditation and breathing, structural alignment, and Qi Gong. Using the technique of “wise progression”, Ben teaches yoga from a place of compassion and leadership, often using humor to connect with students. Ben expresses his knowledge of the body by incorporating alignment principles throughout his classes. He is able to safely bring students to their edge by encouraging them to rest when they need to, take it to the edge when possible and ultimately enjoy the process of breathing through it. His classes provide a challenge to students while remaining accessible and open to all those interested in the practice of yoga. Ben McLellan Website: Underground Studios

Meaghan began her dance career at the age of seven and has now been dancing for over twenty years. Growing up, Meaghan specialized in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Modern, Hip Hop and Theatre Dance. Meaghan went on to pursue dance at Springfield College (SC) where she earned a B.S. in Dance Movement and Education. Throughout the 2005-2006 season at SC, she became President of the Dance Club and co-artistic director of Pulse, the first Spring Dance Concert at the college. In addition, she performed at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut and with the Best of Broadway Theatre production at SC. After graduation, she went on to teach various styles of dance at numerous studios and facilities in the area. In 2007, Meaghan worked at a fitness center for children, teaching Jazz and Creative Dance. Working at the children’s fitness center made her realize the importance of fitness for not only adults, but for children as well. That summer, Meaghan went on to receive her license as a Zumba instructor in the hopes of making exercise more fun for individuals. From 2008-2009, she completed extensive training in Ballroom and Latin dancing while becoming certified in the Bronze Syllabus. Meaghan won her first professional competition in 2008 at the New England Colonial Classic and her second in the Spring of 2009 at the New England DanceSport Championships. She has recently become certified through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America in the hopes of bringing wellness to all ages with a fun, yet safe ...

A lifelong health and wellness enthusiast, Sarah has over fifteen years of experience teaching group and private fitness classes. For the past five years she has been teaching various forms of mind body exercise, throughout the Boston area and has taught yoga internationally at Ashiyana Yoga Retreat Centre in Goa, India. She attributes her 200 hour Yoga Alliance Certified Training to Rolf Gates, and is currently studying towards her 500 hour E-RYT training at Prajna Yoga, with Tiasand Surya Little. Additionally, she has a passion for delicious, healthy food as means to heal the body and way to savor life, and so has been pursuing courses at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Food & Health in New York City. Through the healing synthesis of breath and movement, provided by the flowing practice of Vinyasa, Sarah has developed a study and teaching style which helps to innervate the spirit and nourish the soul. Her classes may contain a hybrid of disciplines but are always rooted in mindful movement, set to the cadence of fluid breath. Sarah encourages her students, new and old, to arrive at their mats with nothing more than a sense of compassion for themselves and an openness to their own potential. She always invites her students to work with intention in order to elicit a deeper awareness and bring a sense of great peace into their daily lives. Sarah Sturges Website: Yoga Boston SCHEDULE

Amy Leydon With her signature free-flowing style of yoga, Amy’s class is the perfect balance between strength and surrender. She uses clear alignment cues mixed with moments of spontaneous movement to encourage students to follow her guidance but explore their own paths. She feels this combination of structure and experimentation is ultimately how we find our way in yoga and in life. Amy has a 200-hour certification with Ganga White and Tracey Rich at the White Lotus Foundation. She credits much of her teachings to her two main influences, Barbara Benagh and Shiva Rea. Amy has been teaching in Boston for nearly 10 years. She was recently awarded Best Yoga Teacher in Boston by Boston Magazine!
